Rowers, Ellipticals, Exercycles, Treadmills
Rowers or rowing machines offer probably the best overall body workouts if you want to build to something intensive. They're easy to use, easy on the joints, smooth and rhythmic, give plenty of feedback (ours do, anyway) and enable powerful energy burn and stress depletion.
With elliptical cross trainers - similarly impact-free and offering an all-over workout - look for size, robustness, and long stride length (the distance the pedals travel) for best exercise value. Ours are all around 40cm...less means less extension of the leg muscles...and the distance moved by your legs is a big part of what this exercise is about.
